Hi guys, sorry I don't have a recipe this week.  I didn't try anything new which is what I've been pulling from for inspiration.

Did anyone try a new recipe that they want to share?

I've got butternut squash coming up next week for sure!

I cooked ribs in the oven for the first time.

I have this thing about ordering things in restaurants that I can make myself at home - I generally don't do it. But as I have been cooking a lot and expanding my skills, I have fewer and fewer things on my list that I can't cook at home.

This week, I crossed pork ribs off my list.

I thought you had to have very specific equipment to make decent ribs - for me, this meant a charcoal barbeque so I could cook them low and slow with a spice rub for hours and then quickly direct grill them with a little sauce basted on. since I don't have a balcony, I don't have a grill, and so (I thought) I couldn't cook ribs.

Turns out I was wrong. If you prep them just the way you would for the grill, but instead put them in a baking dish covered in foil, and put that in a 275 f oven for 3.5 to 4 hours, they will cook just the way they need to. then I just have to mix a sauce for them and baste the ribs, put the oven on broil, put them back in without the foil on top to carmelize the sweet sauce, they turn out pretty darn good.

Ribs just got put back on my shopping list for winter, Huzzah!

I'm going to make them again on monday for thanksgiving dinner. I have a carolina style mustard sauce curing in the fridge. I'll try to remember what I put in the jar.

Honestly, I didn't try anything new in the past month.

I feel uber-conservative.

Hmm, that sounds nice! ^^

It really depends on the week; some are better than others.

Eh, I've gotten as far as buying some cheap red wine to cook with--I don't drink it, so we never have leftovers to try it with! I also bought a lot of small local organic pears and apples, so we'll what the heck I wind up with! Poached fruit, or winey stew of some sort...?
