The basics.
Sep. 11th, 2011 06:24 amEver replied to the mention of a certain type of food with "I love that! Why haven't I eaten it in so long?" Personally, I do this all the time. So, here's a game of sorts: I'm going to start off by mentioning a handful of foods that are on my mind and good reasons to keep them on hand, and if anyone wants to speak up (type up?) with a few of their own, that would be great. Don't feel constrained by what I list, which are going to be mostly raw/ingredient type things – that's a quirk of my eating pattern, not an implicit rule of the post.
• Asian pears. I bought a bucket load of these the other day at a bulk store for the first time in years, and my god, they're juicy and sweet and the perfect kind of tart around the core.
• Potatoes. For some reason I got it into my head that potatoes are hard to prepare, but there was a bag of 2" reds laying around, and they boiled up in no time at all (and then turned into delicious garlic mashed potatoes).
• Garlic. How did I live without garlic?
• Kidney beans. I meant to add these to my potatoes yesterday and ended up eating them as an appetizer beforehand. This is one of those foods that falls both under the category of "things I love eating" and "things I should be eating", which is always for the win.

(My own icon today mostly due to listening in another tab to various oboe concerti)
*butter! (I smell some now and like)
*marshmallows! (Slightly sweet and gooey. Not Vegan, according to my sister.)
*pecans~ (good to keep on hand to snack on!)
*cashews~ (when you don't have any pecans!)

That's okay!

Date: 2011-09-12 01:58 am (UTC)- Pomegranates, for the same reasons listed above, and because peeling it is something of a tactile horror show for me.
- Coconuts, fresh. Limited availability is the driving force behind me not having them often enough. I also have trouble digesting them. The horrible stomach ache? Worth it.
- Parsnips. I'm not sure why I don't eat them more often, probably just a lack of knowledge on how to cook them.
- Anarcho Pie, which is a pie full of mixed vegetables, legumes, nuts, etc. It doesn't have set ingredients and the skeleton of the recipe comes from the song "Anarcho Pie" by Oi Polloi. My mom used to make this for me on thanksgiving, and I also always made it Farm Sanctuary's Thanksgiving potluck.

Date: 2011-09-12 03:11 am (UTC)Anarcho pie is intriguing to me. Though considering I had a almond butter and jelly sandwich for dinner, I don't think I'm up for that 'cooking' thing just now.
